Ingrid Perkins recently attended her official visit at Missouri State University. She will be playing NCAA Women’s Division I soccer for MSU. Ingrid received both athletic and academic scholarships that will cover her tuition, room, and board for four years. Being a student at Maize has allowed her the opportunity to devote a lot of time to practicing soccer and playing games. She has also attended the local community college for dual credit courses for the past two years. Ingrid is looking forward to attending MSU next fall! Go Bears!!

A year ago, I signed up to draw for a collaborative art magazine called Coexist. My friend from South Korea who hosted it gathered a team of artists from all over the world to submit drawings of themselves with an endangered animal of their choice, and the proceeds of Coexist go towards the protection and conservation of these animals. It'll be published soon, and my first time having my work in print!
My brother, Justis, and I enjoy serving at the Lord’s Diner on a monthly basis alongside our immediate family and friends from church. The Lord’s Diner feeds an evening meal to the homeless and needy in downtown Wichita 365 days per year. It served its 5 millionth guest during Thanksgiving 2018! The Lord’s Diner’s goal, according to its website, is to serve a nutritious meal with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry.
We clean tables, get refills, serve food, and clean-up to ensure those who need a meal get one. It is rewarding to be able to offer a full-service dining experience with a smile and kind word to those who may need it most. We have met many unique individuals and have grown closer to friends and family through our service at The Lord’s Diner. If you would like more information on serving at the Lord’s Diner in Wichita, call Sarah at 316-266-4966 or email her at [email protected]. School Clubs and Activities - My name is Emma Perkins. I was the president of Student Council for two years, and I really enjoyed that time interacting with other students. Favorite Class - I have always been good at math, but I never really appreciated it until I was taking Calculus II from the community college. Before I took high level math courses, I never saw the point of math. Favorite Teacher - My favorite teacher from high school is Dr. Parks. She is always super supportive! Future Plans - I am planning on going to the University of Kansas next semester. I will be studying Chemical Engineering. I want to eventually have a job that helps the environment and allows me to work outside. Over this next summer I am hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail. Advice for Future Students - I encourage future students to take additional advanced classes outside of the online school. Going to Maize has allowed me to take nearly all of my classes though the community college. High school isn't about learning information, it is about learning how to learn. Favorite Class: My favorite class was welding technology at the Newton area votech. I learned many new skills in that class. Favorite Teacher: My favorite teacher was Mrs. Widrig. She was always willing to help with anything and answer any questions anyone had. Thank You: I want to thank my family friends and teachers - all of them have helped me through high school. Future Plans: I do plan to get a job in this coming summer and go to college the following school year. Advice for Future Students: My advice to others is work hard and take a class you enjoy. School doesn't just have to be about school you can have some fun with it to. Looking to the Future - I plan to go into Holistic Care and eventually open my own business of natural hair care products. Favorite Subject and Teacher - My favorite class was my Comp 101 class with Mr. McDaniel. Thank you for taking a new approach and letting your students be more creative and self-motivated. You have always been helpful and understanding as my advisor. Thank You - A big thank you to my mom for giving me the opportunity to do online school and to my fiance, Brian, for helping to keep me motivated to graduate. Activities and Achievements - I've done a lot of different things throughout the years, but high school was all about theater for me. I was involved in ten different theatrical productions both inside of and outside of school programs. I acted in plays and musicals, and am currently operating the light board for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, at Gardner Edgerton Theater, and Violet, at the Olathe Civic Theater Association. I'd have to say that it's very difficult to pin down any one favorite memory from four of the most formative years of my life, as it feels as though each and every thing I've done has contributed in a meaningful way to who I am today. There are some moments that stick out, though. The first show I was cast in at the high school, Fiddler on the Roof, which was also the first show I was ever a part of, was very exciting. All the friends I made in and out of school over the past four years hold a very dear place in my heart. Favorite Teachers and Subjects - My favorite teachers have all been people who went above and beyond the call of education, to help me as an individual, and to really try to reach me. Jami Widrig and Michelle Parks really helped me grow as a person and learn things beyond the subject they were teaching. That said, my favorite subject will always be theater. Whether on stage, or building it, I love being a part of a performance. I find it truly fulfilling in a way that nothing else has been for me, and possibly never will. Thank You - I want to thank all of my friends, for being there for me, and letting me be there for them. My parents, of course, have been there every step of the way, always striving for my success and my dreams. I couldn't do this without any of them. Advice for Future MVPS HS Students - Advice I'd give to future students would be to always do your best work. Always try to get along with someone before you try to get 'even' with them, and communicate everything all the time with everyone. I cannot stress that enough, communicate anything you need or any problems you have. Not just in school, but everywhere. It comes in handy. Looking To the Future - I plan to attend the University of Kansas and hope to take the theater courses there to advance my understanding of the arts, and then venture out into the world of professional theater! Quote that Inspired Me - "You have to stay in school. You have to. You have to go to college. You have to get your degree. Because that's the one thing people can't take away from you is your education. And it is worth the investment." -Michelle Obama |
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Student Spotlight is a chance for students to share their thoughts, talents and experiences. There will be a monthly topic posted where students can share their opinions and views about the topic in question. There may also be months where a light is shown on a student that has a particular interest or talent, so we can learn more about our MVPS classmates. Archives
